Vanguard42 was birthed from the charter school movement in the United States with Green Dot Public Schools. I (JP Eaglin) was the first recruit to the organization in 1999 by Steve Barr (co-founder of Rock the Vote). We had nothing but a dream and a piece of paper and ended up building one of the most successful school systems in the nation.
Our first school, Ánimo Leadership Charter High School, was established in the fall of 2000 in Inglewood, Los Angeles, CA. The first community we began serving had a 75% dropout rate. We immediately turned that into a 96% maturation rate to four-year university. This transformational turnaround had never been done in the history of education in the United States and Green Dot was quickly named the best charter school system in the nation.
With our proven game-changing results in-hand we began to successfully lobby The State of California and the US Federal Government to change laws to empower public schools and increase funding. Our fundraising efforts soared to new heights once we onboarded The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Disney's Eisner Foundation.
The sustained success of our efforts to transform communities by creating safe, nurturing, learning environments blessed me with the confidence to keep dreaming Bigger. I went on to launch my first agency and began my world travels - Crafting Creator Economies and Sustainable Ecosystems by blending The Arts, Emerging Tech and Impact.
Green Dot currently operates 18 college prep schools in the highest-need areas throughout Los Angeles, with 9 schools ranking in the top 100 high schools in the nation - US News and World Report. Green Dot has received numerous awards and was featured in the 2010 movie, Waiting for Superman, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim – An Inconvenient Truth.
President Bill Clinton, Governer Grey Davis, Martin Sheen, and every progressive democrat came to our first school, Ánimo Leadership, to get out the vote during the 2002 presidential election. That's me with the big afro right behind the Prez.
On my quest in developing the best school system in the world I held several positions over the years with Green Dot. I only had two limitation - if I could find the time and the budget I was given the green light to launch any program I wanted to implement.
